Wines of Uruguay
About
Uruguay enjoys the ideal geographical location to excel in the production of fine wines. Situated in the southern hemisphere between the parallels 30 and 35 S, like its fellow wine-producing countries of Argentina, Chile, South Africa, and Australia and New Zealand. The clay-based soil and the balanced distribution of sun, rainfall, and temperature in Uruguay are optimal for the growth of the vines, which lie among the gently undulating hills without any artificial irrigation.
Wines of Uruguay is the organization formed by the wineries members of the Association of Exporting Wineries, and the Association of Wine Tourism. The mission is to contribute to consolidate the brand “Uruguay wine country” among commercial operators, opinion leaders and consumers.

The U.S. and Canada are Uruguay’s largest export markets after Brazil. With more Tannat grown in Uruguay than the rest of the world combined, Tannat is Uruguay’s signature variety. Uruguayan wineries have also found success with Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Albariño and Viognier.
