Karl Wente Releases 5th Vintage of Wine and Music Pairings

26 September, 2011

Fifth Generation Winemaker Karl Wente Releases Fifth Vintage of Wine and Music Pairings LIVERMORE, CA – Karl Wente and Wente Vineyards continue to showcase their commitment to the synergies between wine and music with the release of their fifth annual emerging artist program: Discover the Wine, Discover the Music (DWDM). DWDM began five years ago when Fifth Generation Winemaker Karl Wente decided to blend his love for fine wines with independent original music. Every year Karl pairs six up-and-coming indie artists’ singles with six of his Estate grown wines to create a new “vintage.”  The DWDM fifth vintage of emerging artists went live on September 1, 2011. “Pairing wines and songs is an incredibly fun task,” says Karl Wente.  “To be present with six cool songs and six wines while drawing parallels between the structures, melodies, acidity, tannins, percussion, and bass line.  Is it major or minor?  Light or heavy?  Following the instrumentation of the song as it parallels the flavors and aromas of the wine and uncovering why these synergies exist is such a complex but rewarding process.” Karl Wente holds a strong belief that great wine and good food should be paired with original music and shared with friends. This is evident in Wente Vineyards’ ongoing support of the independent music scene and their active participation in events like SXSW, Noise Pop, Big Noise in the Neighborhood and MUSEXPO. In addition, Karl Wente along with San Francisco’s leading alternative rock radio station LIVE 105, recently hosted Wente Vineyards’ BottleRockIt Music Festival on September 10, 2011, which brought masses of music enthusiasts to Wente Vineyards’ Estate winery in the Livermore Valley. Attendees enjoyed a day of great music, food, wine and sunshine where over 20 bands, including Givers, The Holdup, Dirty Vegas, and A B & The Sea, performed on three separate stages. Karl’s DWDM experience has a fully integrated approach with in-market materials including bottle neckers, posters, case cards and check stuffers. All materials drive consumers to the DWDM website, where visitors are given the opportunity to download free tracks from the featured artists and learn more about each of the paired Wente Vineyards wines. Additionally, the program sponsors a sweepstakes, in states where legal, where a winner is selected to bring themselves and a guest out to Wente Vineyards to see a concert of their choice at the heralded Concerts at Wente Vineyards, which celebrated its 25th Anniversary this year. This year’s Vintage 5 pairings will be available on the DWDM website beginning September 1, 2011 and will run until Vintage 6 starts next September. The pairings are as follows: The Head and the Heart’s “Lost in my Mind” paired with the Riva Ranch Chardonnay. Unapologetically American - rich and delicate at the same time. Givers’ “Up Up Up” paired with the Small Lot Eric’s Chardonnay.  Intense without being heavy. Phantogram’s “When I’m Small” paired with the Small Lot GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre). Karl Wente notes that Syrah is like funky guitar/primal surf, Mourvedre is an exotic, untamed, old school, low-fi, earthy funk, and Grenache is the dreamy, sugary quality of the vocals. The Belle Brigade’s “Losers” paired with the Sandstone Merlot. Sweet and dark with certain spiciness. Birds and Batteries’ “Stranger Kind of Mirror” paired with the Nth Degree Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark and rich, bittersweet with a halo of reverb. A B & The Sea’s “Bone Dry” paired with the equally bone dry Louis Mel Sauvignon Blanc. For more information on the Vintage 5 artists/wine pairings and the Discover the Wine Discover the music program, visit www.wentevineyards.com/discover. Wente Vineyards Announces Harvest

21 September, 2011

LIVERMORE, CA September 2011 – The early autumn season that heralds harvest has finally arrived.  This year, in particular, patience is a necessary virtue as harvest is starting later than usual due to a summer of unseasonal weather. The Livermore Valley appellation experienced an unusually cool, wet spring and early summer that created a challenge for several winemakers in the region.  Regardless of capricious weather conditions, Wente Vineyards looks forward to another fruitful year. Wente Vineyards celebrated their first day of harvest on September 12, 2011.  Sauvignon Blanc from the east side of the Livermore Valley was the first to be harvested, followed by Chardonnay. “The yields at this point are on track with our estimates and the quality of grapes is superb,” said Fifth Generation Winemaker, Karl Wente. “The cool spring and summer, combined with oddly timed rains created a challenge this year, however this season is quite similar to last year, which produced some great wines.” The Wente family was one of the earliest advocates of sustainable farming, and has a well-documented history filled with articles on the wisdom and benefits of a holistic approach to farming. Today, the fourth and fifth generations continue to lead the way with respect to stewardship of the land. In the early 1990s, the Wente family established their “Farming for the Future” program, which took into account the health and well being of its employees, local community and the planet.   This system of practices not only enhanced the vitality of the soils on the family’s 3,000 acres of Estate vineyards in the Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco appellations, but created a balanced sustainable ecology that minimized water use and reduced non-organic waste.  This philosophy also carries over to the three Estate wineries (Wente Vineyards, Murrieta’s Well and TAMÁS Estates) and includes every aspect of the family operation (The Restaurant, Concerts, Catering and The Course at Wente Vineyards). In 2010, the company achieved California Certified Sustainable Winegrowing certification by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, becoming one of 18 wineries leading the way in sustainable practices.  For more information about CCSW, please visit: www.sustainablewinegrowing.org. DeLoach seeks to produce exceptional wines that spotlight the singular personality of the Russian River Valley, with its rare and bountiful convergence of the sea, the soil and the stars. Momokawa Saké Pairing Smackdown

1 August, 2011

Momokawa Saké Pairing Smackdown Thursday, August 4 at 5:00 p.m. WHAT: The ultimate saké and food pairing challenge will hit maximum velocity this Thursday when two local restaurants pair Momokawa Organic Junmai Ginjo with dishes from two very diverse cuisines- Modern Japanese fusion and deeply rooted, classic Mexican cuisine. WHEN: Media arrivals begin at 5:00 p.m., with competition kicking off at 6:00 p.m. sharp WHERE: Yakuza Izakaya, 5411 NE 30th Ave., Portland, OR 97211 WHO: Chef David Gaspar de Alba of Yakuza Izakaya vs. Chef Oswaldo Bibiano of Autentica Chef David Gaspar de Alba was born in El Paso, Texas, where the heat and vibrant community gave him a solid basis for the love for spice and flavor in his life. While Chef David holds western Texas near and dear to his heart, food culture brought him to Portland. From the rich Kobe tartare, to succulent duck, all the way to delicate sashimi, Chef David has a hand in a wealth of food components at Yakuza. Inspired by the Japanese izakaya concept, Yakuza is a food-lover’s bar. Autentica was created through a combination of traditional cooking in Chef Oswaldo Bibiano's hometown of Guerrero, Mexico, and the appreciation for fine dining he developed while cooking in some of Portland's most distinguished restaurants. Autentica chooses the freshest ingredients from local farms whenever possible and the menu reflect the changing seasons but keeps its roots firmly planted in traditional Mexican cuisine. MORE: This event is open to the public. Both dishes featured in the challenge will be available at Yakuza Lounge and Autentica as the special for the remainder of the evening. This challenge was originally inspired by a tweet from Yakuza Lounge asking for a smackdown on the best pairing possible with saké. Follow developing details on Twitter with #Momokawachallenge ABOUT SAKÉONE: SakéOne is America's premium saké company and importer of some of Japan’s finest saké. Founded in 1992 as an importer, SakéOne has been crafting strictly junmai ginjo quality saké at its state-of-the-art kura (brewery) in Forest Grove, the heart of the Willamette Valley: Oregon’s craft beer-brewing and winemaking mecca, since 1998. In 2010, SakéOne’s Momokawa “Ruby” Junmai Ginjo earned a silver medal at the prestigious U.S. National Sake Appraisal 2010, no small feat for an American producer in a crowd of more than 300 Japanese entrants and a judging panel held to precise Japanese standards. Though SakéOne clearly honors tradition, their Oregonian pioneering spirit is constantly evolving and has truly come to define Oregon craft saké. For more information, please visit www.sakeone.com. Bar Bambino Celebrates Summer of Riesling

14 July, 2011

San Francisco, CA- Bar Bambino, one of San Francisco’s “38 essential restaurants” according to the newly published poll by SF Eater, has joined this year’s Summer of Riesling fever by highlighting exceptional German, Austrian, Italian, French and Croatian Rieslings from their wine list— a perfect match with their Northeastern Italian cuisine. Bar Bambino’s wine director, Collin-Peter Casey, has highlighted Rieslings from the Rheingau, Pfalz, Nahe and Mosel regions in Germany and from the Kamptal Region in Austria, specifically for this summer-long spotlight on this most versatile variety http://summerofriesling.com/.  Long a fan of Riesling’s many charms, the crew at Bar Bambino seized the opportunity to showcase some of its wine list gems. With a wide range of styles from dry to sweet, the wine list features Rieslings for any preference. Chef Lizzie Binder will be creating Riesling-specific specials throughout the summer, and of course some of the menu standards are classic pairings. Bar Bambino’s stuzzichini dishes are a perfect pairing with Eva Fricke’s Rheingau Trocken 2009 (a dry Riesling) or the menu favorite truffled egg bruschetta with the Kuenhof “Kaiton” Riesling from Alto Adige. In addition, Casey revealed that soon he will announce an event where they can pair Riesling with literally any dish on the menu. “It works!” he exclaimed. There will also be at least 3 Rieslings sold exclusively by the glass every day.  Currently in addition to Eva Fricke and the Kuenhof wines, Casey is featuring: Hirsch Zobing 2009, a biodynamic, zippy & bright Austrian Riesling from one of the hottest up & comers of the last 10 years. The Grapes are a stones throw from Heillegenstein, which is a "grand cru" vineyard. Maurice Schoeck Kaffenkopf Grand Cru 2009, an Alsatian Grand Cru juice from a stellar vintage—a brilliant Riesling. Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonneneuhr Auslese "Rotlay" 2007. Rotlay is a small parcel within Sonnenuhr with a particularly complex soil structure that Johannes Selbach is a big fan of. This  "microparcelling" isn't done with any regularity elsewhere, according to Casey. Enjingi Grasevina. A Croatian "Welschriesling" (as its sometimes called), this isn't really a Riesling proper, but that’s irrelevant— it is super delicious and a distant cousin J. There is also a plan to highlight a trocken through auslese tasting at some point this summer. Follow @BarBambino on Twitter for regular updates on the program. The Summer of Riesling event was founded in 2008 by wine professional Paul Greico. He announced his restaurant, Terroir, would be featuring only Riesling for all 92 days of summer. With over 30 Rieslings on the glass list and over 150 by the bottle, the idea was a huge hit. Three years later, it has turned into a national event, with restaurants in every city of the country participating. About Bar Bambino Slightly off the path in San Francisco’s Mission District lies Bar Bambino, a neighborhood eatery that brings simple, elegant food and wine to the table while gathering together friends, family and friends-to-be. Inspired by years of living in Europe, owner Christopher Losa has created a restaurant the San Francisco Chronicle has hailed as “a true oasis with a sexy, speakeasy vibe.” Guests enjoy an unpretentious urban atmosphere at Bar Bambino. Embracing the idea that life is better around the table, Bar Bambino accents the cuisine of Northeastern Italy with its Tyrolean and Friulian influences via Central and Eastern Europe. Featuring locally and sustainably sourced produce and meats, house-made pastas and inspired desserts, Executive Chef Elizabeth Binder with her understated touch brings a lightness and elegance to traditional recipes.  Celebrating its fourth anniversary this year  Bar Bambino has garnered local and national accolades, repeatedly named as a San Francisco Chronicle Top 100 restaurant and one of Bon Appetit Magazine’s Top 10 Wine Bars in the nation.
