Parallel’s 2008 Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was named “Best Cabernet Sauvignon” at the San Francisco International Wine Competition in June 2012. The Parallel Napa Valley 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon won a Double Gold medal in the same competition. The event, which was held from June 15th to June 17th, boasted a field of over 4,500 wines, the largest in the 32-year history of the competition. Only 202 Double Gold awards were given.

Bennett Lane Winery Launches First Winery Branded Hot Air Balloon in California Wine Country
16 August, 2012
Calistoga, CA—Bennett Lane Winery launched its branded hot air balloon on its inaugural flight at 6:30 AM PST today. For its maiden voyage of one hour, the balloon carried six passengers on a journey over the Napa Valley, providing views of the lush pre-harvest vineyards and rolling hills below from approximately 3,000 feet in the air.
The first winery branded hot air balloon in California, the Bennett Lane Winery balloon was built by Kubicek Balloons in the Czech Republic. The balloon stands 67 feet high when inflated and has a diameter of 65 feet. It took over a month of sewing to create the balloon’s envelope, which measures 142,4000 cubic feet, from 16,000 square feet of special ripstop polyester fabric. It also took twenty-five days of dying of the fabric for the special grape color shade for the Bennett Lane logo of grape clusters. Following the balloon landing, winery co-owner Lisa Lynch announced the winning entry of the "Name the Bennett Lane Balloon contest." The chosen name, Calistoga AVA-tion, will be included on the Bennett Lane Winery website at www.bennettlanewinery.com and announced on Twitter via the winery’s handle @BennettLane.
“Who doesn’t love a hot air balloon? We are thrilled to be able to offer our guests a unique way to experience Napa Valley, with our signature Bennett Lane Winery brand of hospitality,” said Bennett Lane Winery owner Randy Lynch. Randy and his wife Lisa were joined by special guest, World Series Champion Manager Tony La Russa, for a celebratory brunch and press conference following today’s flight.
Bennett Lane Winery, in partnership with Calistoga Balloons, will now offer standard and private flight packages for guests who would like to experience the thrill of riding in their hot air balloon. Private flights in the balloon are available in either two, four, or six person options and include a limousine pickup from an up-valley hotel prior to launch, a Bennett Lane flight jacket, and brunch at The Grill at Meadowood. Also included in this package is a private reserve tasting at Bennett Lane Winery following the flight. The prices for this package are $1999, $2399 and $2899 for two, four, and six people respectively.
A standard flight with a group in the hot air balloon includes a Bennett Lane flight hat, brunch at The Grill at Meadowood and a tour and tasting at Bennett Lane that includes a picnic lunch. Transportation to and from the launch site is provided; guests must provide their own transportation to the winery. This package is priced per individual and costs $339 per guest.

Man O’ War Preferred Supplier of ORACLE TEAM USA
13 August, 2012
Award-winning, boutique New Zealand winery, Man O’ War Vineyards, is proud to announce its association as the Preferred Supplier ORACLE TEAM USA, for the 2013 America’s Cup in San Francisco! Man O’ War Vineyards’ nautical history and New Zealand’s association with the America’s Cup inspired the Man O’ War team to align this great wine with this talented team. Man O’ War boasts a strong sailing connection which dates back to the 1700’s when Captain James Cook was circumnavigating New Zealand. Cook was anchored in the beautiful Waiheke Island bay when his attention was taken by the Kauri, a native tree of impressive magnitude and strength. He noted that Kauri trees would be ideal for masts on Man O’ War war ships for Britain’s Royal Navy. The trees were utilised and the name ‘Man O’ War’ bestowed on the bay. The legend continues today with many of Man O’ War’s wines named after great ships such as Ironclad, Dreadnought and Valhalla. Another serendipitous link between the wines and the race is that significant parts of ORACLE TEAM USA’s America’s Cup raceboats are being constructed in New Zealand at Core Builders Composites in Warkworth ahead of the competition on San Francisco Bay in 2013. Bronwyn Skuse, Man O’ War Vineyards Sales Manager, is making sure that the award winning Syrah, Chardonnay and Bordeaux Blends, as well as the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, will be available for San Francisco’s wine enthusiasts, “We are thrilled to be associated with ORACLE TEAM USA for the 34th Americas Cup in the beautiful city of San Francisco. We are working closely with our distributors to have Man O’ War available at restaurants, wine bars and fine retail stores for all to enjoy”. Man O’ War wines are available in top restaurants and hotels around the world including London’s The Savoy, Harrods and Chez Bruce; Oman’s Chedi; Singapore’s roof top Ku Dé Ta; New York’s Waldorf Astoria and Soho House; Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont, Beverly Hills Hotel, Fairmont and Sangri-la Hotels; Chicago’s Trump Tower as well as many resorts and country clubs throughout the US. In San Francisco, top restaurants and wine bars are getting behind this exciting occasion, many of which overlook the race course. A growing list already includes Neptunes, Ana Mandara, Ozumo, Sens, Park Tavern, Hidden Vine, Solstice, Kokkari and Alexander’s Steak House. To enjoy Man O’ War wines from the comfort of your own home (or boat!), the Jug Shop and JJ Buckley have the full range available for purchase and have plenty of information about the wine and vineyards. For those living outside San Francisco, leading online retailer JJ Buckley can deliver Man O’ War wine to your front door where shipping is legal in the US. Watch out for some exciting promotional opportunities from this sponsorship, including Man O’ War wine dinners at some of San Francisco’s top restaurant. Please visit www.manowarvineyards.co.nz for more details on Man O’ War wines and join us on facebook: www.facebook.com/ManOWarVineyards. About Man O’ War Vineyards Grapes were first introduced to Man O’ War in 1993. Today, 150 acres of vines are strategically placed around Man O’ War’s 4500 acres, enhancing its intrinsic beauty. Ninety individual pockets of hillsides on Waiheke Island and the neighbouring Ponui Island have been carefully selected and developed, each chosen for the unique and exceptional qualities they bring to our wines. Meticulous design ensures that the distinct soil profile and microclimate of each block is used to best advantage with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities selected to match the specific terroir on offer. Man O’ War’s hilltops feature a volcanic soil mixed with clay forming the loam. Our white varieties have been carefully placed high on these exposed hilltops so that they benefit from cooling sea breezes, extending their growing season and giving them great concentration and minerality. While our red varieties are draped down precipitously steep and sheltered clay hillsides enjoying the heat and drainage provided, promoting serious intensity and depth. About ORACLE TEAM USA ORACLE TEAM USA is the current America’s Cup champion. Led by CEO Russell Coutts and skipper Jimmy Spithill, its aim is to win the America’s Cup again in San Francisco in 2013. World Renowned Communications Expert to Help Wine Industry Leaders Master Art of Public Speaking
26 June, 2012
Napa, CA – Communications expert Lynda Spillane will lead a Public Speaking Mastery Workshop in Napa on Monday, July 30th and Tuesday, July 31st as part of the Leadership Series at WISE Academy, which focuses on building direct-to-consumer and leadership development in sales, marketing and management within the wine industry. Taking place over two full days, this interactive course is designed to help participating CEOs, winemakers and other top level industry executives achieve stronger communication skills. The course will focus on general communication and public speaking, including tips on how to write and deliver an effective speech, read audience emotions, handle media communications and improve confidence in impromptu speaking.
Course instructor Lynda Spillane, President and CEO of The Persuasive Word, has over 30 years of academic study and teaching in the fields of psychology, theater, rhetoric, oratory, public performance, persuasive communication and leadership. She has worked with over 10,000 executives and politicians worldwide on communications skills, including CEOS, presidents of organizations, and prominent politicians including two British Prime Ministers and King Abdullah II of Jordan. Spillane is also a popular keynote speaker at conventions for the Entrepreneurs Organization, the Young Presidents’ Organization and others.
“I have personally taken this workshop with Lynda twice and can’t wait to take it again,” shares Lesley Berglund Chairman of the WISE Academy. “It is amazing to see how in just two days she transforms business executives who are not confident speakers into ones that are comfortable and at ease. Even more impressive is to witness her transform good or great speakers into phenomenal ones. Not matter if you are speaking to your distributors, your customers or your employees – mastering the art of public speaking is one of the most important gifts you can give yourself.”
“We are so advanced in our use of technology, yet we continue to deliver Seventies-style presentations that are simply ineffective,” says Spillane. “Public speaking is not a matter of using PowerPoint or similar technology. It’s a matter of persuading and moving an audience- providing them with a rewarding and often emotional experience.”
The cost of the course is $2,000. Participants can register at www.wineindustrysalesacademy.com through Friday, July 20th, 2012.

The Front Porch presents Homegrown at Wente Vineyards
20 June, 2012
Livermore, CA – As part of Wente Vineyards’ ongoing support of new independent music, Karl Wente, Fifth Generation Winemaker at Wente Vineyards, is proud to announce The Front Porch presents Homegrown, a showcase of local Bay Area musical talent. As a creative individual who applies that energy to both winemaking and music, composing, arranging and performing is tightly woven into the fabric of Karl’s life, he is constantly discovering new artists and sounds. This year, two extraordinary bands will be featured as part of the Homegrown series, alongside The Front Porch, which includes Karl Wente. The name of the band and the festival were inspired by the 19th century porch at Karl Wente’s home, where he is often found collaborating with friends and musicians that are passing through town. “Sure, The Front Porch is an actual place where this all started, but it also represents a way of thinking, a state of mind. It’s basically about good music, good wine and good friends, wherever we may find ourselves.”

Wine and music work to stimulate our senses and add depth to our lives and, for many, are inextricably intertwined. Wine, like music, encompasses a broad range of styles and evokes memories and emotions for those who experience it. Much like the 32 cultivars of grapes that Karl Wente works with at his family’s vineyards in Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco in California, his eclectic tastes are reflected in the sounds of the bands he chooses every year.
This celebration of local music will take place at Wente Vineyards Estate Winery and Tasting Room located at 5565 Tesla Road in Livermore, CA, where guests will have plenty of room to dance, picnic and enjoy Wente Vineyards’ award-winning wines. The event runs from 5pm to 9pm. Tickets can be purchased online at ticketweb.com beginning Wednesday, June 20th or purchased at the door for $15, or $10 for Club Members. For additional information on Davy Knowles and The Stone Foxes, please visit TheStoneFoxes.com or DavyKnowles.com.
In addition to The Front Porch presents Homegrown, Wente Vineyards will host their third annual The Front Porch Music Festival September 1st, 2012 from 3pm to 9pm. This mini Outside Lands’ style festival will feature well known nationally acclaimed artists in the Americana/ Bluegrass genre from around the country. Beginning Wednesday, June 20th, tickets can be purchased for $20 at ticketweb.com or purchased at the door for $30. Special pricing will also be available to Club Members.

Hourglass Wine Company Appoints Anthony Biagi Winemaker
5 June, 2012
St. Helena, CA – The Hourglass Wine Company announced today the appointment of Anthony “Tony” Biagi as the winemaker for its two estate vineyards: Hourglass Estate in St. Helena and the Blueline Vineyard in Calistoga. Biagi’s long-established focus and dedication to Bordeaux varietals in the Napa Valley combined with almost ten years of experience with the Plumpjack Group at Plumpjack and Cade Wineries has prepared him well for this position.
Hourglass partner, Jeff Smith, stated “Tony is a gifted winemaker whose style and experience are a natural extension of what we have achieved since the founding of Hourglass in 1997. He will be a valuable addition to our team. Hourglass has evolved significantly over the past 15 years under the consulting efforts of Bob Foley, one of the most respected winemakers in Napa Valley. We are proud of our history crafting quality wines, but felt at this stage of our evolution we needed the attention of a full-time winemaker. Our mission has never wavered, which is to craft estate grown, terroir driven, modern Napa wines of the highest caliber. We have found in Tony a uniquely capable winemaker who shares our vision.”
A native Californian, Biagi has held a deep love of wine since a childhood visit to a friend’s winery in Lodi, California. He holds a degree in fermentation science from the University of California Davis and interned in winemaking at both Hess Collection and Dry Creek Vineyard. He joined Duckhorn Vineyards as an enologist under the guidance of Tom Rinaldi, honing his skills and rapidly graduating from assistant to full-time winemaker in three years. After a stint as winemaker at Neal Family Vineyards, he joined the Plumpjack Group as winemaker in 2003 and has overseen the winemaking at both Plumpjack and Cade Wineries until the present. “The Hourglass and Blueline Estate Vineyards are what drew me to this project. These sites are some of the most compelling in the Napa Valley, and I’m extremely eager to handcraft wines from these distinct properties. I’m very excited to work with the Hourglass team and honored to be chosen to build upon the legacy that Bob Foley started.”
