In addition, he also writes a popular blog about everything cocktails, spirits, bars and bartenders called Alcademics. The Mellow Mafia was created by the team at SakéOne.   Though it has become increasingly customary to find chilled, high quality, artisan saké served on it’s own, saké adds depth and body to cocktails at a lower alcohol level than the classic spirits or wine ingredients. Beverage enthusiasts have long touted that saké has no measurable sulfites, no measurable gluten, it’s lower in calories than spirits, and it can be used to create amazingly diverse cocktails.  Because of this versatility, saké works seamlessly with spicy, fruity or floral flavors in cocktails.   To view SakéOne’s full cocktail portfolio, please visit the cocktail page on their website.   About SakéOne SakéOne is America’s first craft saké producer and compliments its own fine products with a growing portfolio of fine Japanese saké imports. Peter Liem’s Sherryfest to Make its San Francisco Debut

22 May, 2014

San Francisco, CA -- Wine lovers will come together at Peter Liem’s California premiere of Sherryfest, for a week full of fabulous rare sherry, pithy seminars and expertly paired dinners hosted by some of Jerez’s most noteworthy producers. The sought after fifth edition of Sherryfest will be held in San Francisco from June 17-20, 2014, and will feature a variety of exciting events for both consumers and wine professionals. Events include producer-hosted dinners on June 17, 18 & 19, seminars on June 19 & 20, and a Grand Tasting on Wednesday, June 18 at Bluxome Street Winery. The four dinner events will showcase rare sherries paired alongside some of San Francisco’s most innovative cuisine, featuring such award-winning restaurants as Central Kitchen, Trou NormandBar Agricole and St. Vincent Tavern & Wine Merchant.   Seminars will be conducted at the beautiful 18 Reasons event space in the Mission District (save for the “Pairing Sherry with Food” seminar, which will be held at the newly opened Upstairs Central Kitchen). Other seminar highlights include “Flor Aging in Fino & Manzanilla,” “Old & Rare Sherry” and a special Mater Class on Palo Cortado, that rarest and most mysterious of sherries.   Sherryfest is the brainchild of noted wine writer Peter Liem, who authors ChampagneGuide.net and recently published Sherry, Manzanilla & Montilla: A Guide to the Traditional Wines of Andalucia, and Rosemary Gray, director of RS Productions NYC. Launched in 2012, Sherryfest immediately became the largest sherry event to ever take place outside of Spain, and Liem has become one of America’s greatest advocates of this storied yet modern beverage. Featuring an array of tasting events, seminars and sherry dinners with bodega representatives, the event has since expanded to include Portland, Toronto and now San Francisco.   Primary bodega hosts for the dinners and seminars include Rey Fernando de Castilla, Williams & Humbert, González Byass, Barbadillo, Sánchez Romate, Tradición and Lustau. Also participating in the Grand Tasting are such distinguished names as Valdespino, Gutiérrez Colosía, Delgado Zuleta, Osborne, Bodegas 501, La Guita, Urium, Hidalgo-La Gitana, Aecovi, Dios Baco and many others.   Liem has called sherry “the hottest wine in New York” and it has indeed been on an impressive, if still modest, comeback tour in the US in recent years. Once derided as the démodé beverage of choice for the elder set (mostly thanks to the reputation left by the sweeter cream sherries), sherry—particularly dry versions such as fino and amontillado—has quickly become one of the hottest wine styles among sommeliers, writers and the international wine cognoscenti, thanks to its excellent value and versatility with food. Imports have certainly increased over the last three years, with big houses like González Byass citing that shipments to the U.S. have increased threefold in the last decade. Grand Tasting registration is now open, and tickets for dinners and seminars are also available for purchase. The Grand Tasting at Bluxome Street Winery is open to the wine trade from 11:00am to 4:00pm, and to consumers from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Though it is a free event, pre-registration is required for admittance. Seminars and the Palo Cortado Master Class range from $30-$50. The price of each dinner is $130, which is all-inclusive of food, sherry, tax and gratuity. All event attendees must be at least 21 years of age. For media inquiries and interviews, please contact Kimberly Charles or Alexandra Fondren at Charles Communications Associates at 415|701-9463 or press@charlescomm.com. For additional event information, please contact Rosemary Gray of RS Productions NYC at rosemary.s.gray@gmail.com, or follow @Sherryfest on Twitter and Instagram.     # # #

Casey Flat Ranch Winery Unveils New Label Design

7 May, 2014

San Francisco, California — Casey Flat Ranch, the Capay Valley’s leading producer of artisan Bordeaux and Rhone style wines, announced the spring unveiling of an updated label design today. “The classic new look not only evokes the winery’s heritage but also reflects the quality of the wines,” explains Managing Partner, Alison Morey Garrett. As the wines have received more national recognition, the brand aesthetic has evolved from its inaugural design to speak more to its roots to the land and the property. The revamped motif is reflected in two new label designs. Single varietal releases will feature an elegant, sepia-toned image of alone Texas Longhorn steer standing atop a rugged mount, framed by vintagepostcard stamps. The Estate Red Wine will showcase multiple steers to symbolize the multi-varietal blend. The designs conjure the rustic romance of the 200+ Longhorn cattle that roam the 6,000-acre mountain ranch. The antique postcard motif speaks to the property’s heritage dating back to the 19th century when it was included in the Berreyesa Spanish Land Grant of 1846, as well as the sense of escape one feels when visiting the Ranch. Conceived and executed by design consultants Rick Anwyl and Brice Beasley, their objective with the new label was to communicate an authentic, emotional reflection of the core attributes of Casey Flat Ranch. As Rick describes, “It's about creating a visual experience for the consumer. The Casey Flat Ranch brand represents a new definition of modern day western; we think about it as patina vs. polish. That is what we desired to communicate through the archival steel etched engraving of a Longhorn cattle drive, sensitive typography and a deliberately detailed and visually arresting seal that was embossed into the label." The new label design creates a clear delineation between the winery’s Casey Flat Ranch Estate and Open Range product tiers. The Open Range line relies on the winery’s relationships with top growers from California’s premier growing regions to craft richness and complexity alongside a varying percentage of estate fruit. The Estate wines showcase the Ranch’s own mountain vineyards, including the latest spring releases that now feature the new label: 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, 2013 Viognier and 2013 Syrah Rosé. Also included in the winery’s Estate tier is the Casey Flat Ranch Estate Grenache as well as the signature Estate Red Wine, a Syrah/Cabernet blend that will transition to its new label design with the 2012 release later this fall. Consumers can expect to see the new packaging on shelves and in restaurants this month, with the full portfolio transitioned to the new design by early 2015.  About Casey Flat Ranch Winery Casey Flat Ranch is based in the Capay Valley AVA, in the Vaca Mountains bordering the eastern side of Napa County (22 miles due east of St. Helena). The working ranch is defined by its award-winning Rhone and Bordeaux-style blends, stunningly rugged location, the purebred Longhorn cattle that roam the estate, and a rich homesteading heritage that dates back to California’s Gold Rush era. Casey Flat Ranch's two flagship brands, Open Range and the Estate line, serve as the perfect way to ignite the frontier spirit in any wine lover. Charles Krug to Host Napa Valley Barrel Auction

5 May, 2014

St. Helena, California — Charles Krug will open its doors to wine lovers from around the world during Auction Napa Valley on Friday, June 6th, when the winery will host the Napa Valley Barrel Auction and Marketplace on the grounds of their historic and recently renovated property. In the comfort of the winery’s spacious, newly renovated temperature-controlled barrel cellar, guests will taste rare samples from 100 Napa Valley vintners directly from the barrel and participate in the spirited bidding on these limited, custom-designed wines. The top ten bidders on each lot will secure a future release case of the wine they discover that day. The Marketplace extravaganza will take place just outside on the winery’s picturesque, tree-lined promenade, where dozens of Napa Valley wineries will pour current releases alongside over 40 of the region’s most acclaimed restaurants and culinary innovators. This popular and highly anticipated portion of the event is also where prospective bidders can preview the extraordinary lots that will be offered in the Live Auction on Saturday. 2014 marks a momentous year for Charles Krug. With the recent grand opening of their Howard Backen-designed Redwood Cellar Hospitality Center, the heralded release of the estate’s 150th vintage, and the excitement surrounding Peter Mondavi Sr.’s centennial this November, the family-owned winery designed their auction lot to reflect the winery’s new modern aesthetic while maintaining the historic gravitas that defines Charles Krug. With a focus on multi-generational legacies, three generations of the Peter Mondavi Sr. family have united with the six-generational Royal Asscher diamond family to celebrate the wine legend’s 100th birthday year and Royal Asscher’s 160th anniversary. Winning bidders (two couples) will experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip to London that includes three nights at the iconic 5-star The Savoy, one of the world’s most alluring historic hotels (it originally opened its doors in 1889). The Savoy has played host to royalty, world leaders, and legends of the stage and screen. Brilliantly reinvented for the 21st century, old-fashioned glamour continues to sparkle with a new luster. The London trip also includes dinner at one of London’s top restaurants with both the Peter Mondavi Sr. and Asscher families, a behind the scenes tour of the McLaren Technology Centre (for a day both James Bond and Mario Andretti would envy) and a private tour of the Tower of London, featuring the Crown Jewels and the Asscher family’s most significant achievement: the Cullinan Diamond. To ‘crown’ it all off, the lot also includes an iconic 9L bottle of rare Charles Krug wine crafted by three generations of the family as well as a one-of-a-kind pendant with 100 floating diamonds, sapphires and rubies designed by sixth generation family member Lita Asscher, aptly named the Peter Mondavi Sr. 100th Birthday Celebration pendant (valued at $19,500).  Auction Napa Valley is Napa Valley Vintners’ annual community fundraiser that for more than 30 years has utilized the worldwide reputation of Napa Valley wines and the scenic beauty of the region to raise funds to enhance the health and well-being of the Napa Valley community. To date, Napa Valley Vintners has invested more than $120 million from Auction Napa Valley proceeds in Napa County nonprofit organizations. A limited number of three and single-day packages to Auction Napa Valley are still available. To purchase tickets, visit auctionnapavalley.org. About Charles Krug Winery The Charles Krug Winery, Napa Valley's oldest winery, was established by Prussian immigrant Charles Krug in 1861. In 1943, Italian immigrants Cesare and Rosa Mondavi purchased the historic property, which remains a family-owned winery producing estate-driven Napa Valley wines. Built on a foundation of family values, hard work and European winemaking tradition, the winery offers a portfolio of Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-styled wines. The winery is under the direction of Peter Mondavi Jr., who along with his brother Marc Mondavi, stewards the family business passed to them by their father, legendary Napa Valley wine icon Peter Mondavi Sr., who continues to serve as President and CEO. The family is now proudly welcoming members of the fourth generation to the business, continuing a legacy started almost 70 years ago and setting a foundation for generations to come. Four Vines Winery Headlines at the 2014 Beale Street Music Festival

15 April, 2014

Graton, CA – Four Vines Winery, known for crafting wines with a rebel spirit and distinct personality, will be sponsoring the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, TN over the May 2-4 weekend. With the motto, “Living in Zin,” Four Vines produces four great Zinfandel wines, from three appellations in California -- Sonoma, Amador and Paso Robles as well as Truant an Old Vine Zinfandel that showcases fruit from all over California and the original Naked (Unoaked) Chardonnay. Part of the iconic, irreverent and successful Purple Wine Company portfolio, Four Vines will be on site at the Festival sampling several delicious wines to guests who visit the Four Vines tent in the Food Court. In addition, the company will host a hospitality tent for media, the Purple Lounge, located near the Orion Stage. Wine and music have many parallels. Wine lovers may not fully understand how wine is crafted just as when we like a song, we may not be able to read its sheet music or recognize each instrument. Often people buy wine based on recommendations of others as they do with music. Many times a discovery of a great wine or song comes from a zealous friend insisting that you try it out. Wine and music preferences often have much to do with one’s mood and surroundings. One can just as easily enjoy some mellow blues on a Sunday morning as some high energy American classic rock at a summer concert; the same for wine… sometimes a great glass of Champagne to celebrate a significant achievement is warranted and sometimes you just want a great glass of Zinfandel with some killer Barbecue. To that end, Four Vines crafts The Biker, Maverick, Truant and Sophisticate Zinfandels each with a distinctive profile and taste based on the provenance of the grapes from classic California regions that constitute each wine. Naked Chardonnay from Four Vines is a refreshing unoaked departure from the bolder, richer Zinfandel brethren in the portfolio. The Beale Street Music Festival kicks off a national program for Four Vines this summer called “Rock the Right Mix.” Point of sale for the campaign includes neckers, shelftalkers and floor displays. The campaign kicked off April 1st and will run through September 1st.  Four Vines has created a unique microsite, www.fourvinesmix.com, where one can find food pairing ideas/recipes, streaming music inspired by the wines and a party calculator to help with one’s shopping – e.g. how much food and wine to buy based on how many guests will attend. Guests of the Festival are invited to visit the Four Vines tent located in the Food Court to sample Four Vines Truant Zinfandel, Naked Chardonnay and a handful of Purple Wine Company’s other wines. The Four Vines team will be pouring on Friday, May 2 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm, Saturday, May 3 from 1:00pm to 8:00pm and Sunday, May 4 from 1:00pm to 8:00pm. For more information about Purple Wine Company, visit www.purplewine.com. Peter Mondavi Sr. to Celebrate Centennial Birthday

12 March, 2014

St. Helena, California — Peter Mondavi Sr., President and CEO of Charles Krug Winery, will be commemorated for his 70-year career in the wine industry with the winery’s official opening on April 5th of its new, Howard Backen-designed Historic Redwood Cellar & Hospitality Center. It also comes on the heels of Mr. Mondavi’s recent acceptance of Wine Enthusiast’s ‘American Wine Legend’ Wine Star Award in New York City, which honors his 38 years as President, as well as his lasting contributions to California’s wine industry. Mr. Mondavi will celebrate his centennial birthday in November. Along with the prestigious Wine Enthusiast recognition, Mr. Mondavi is one of twelve ‘Living Legends’ appointed by the Napa Valley Vintners Association and a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient for Napa Valley vintners from the California State Fair. He was also added to the CIA Vintners Hall of Fame in 2012. Though his official birthday is in November, the April 5th celebration at the new Charles Krug tasting facility reflects his pride in the recent enhancements and ardent commitment to the future of the estate. He resides at the winery in St. Helena and maintains active involvement in almost every aspect of the family-owned enterprise. Mr. Mondavi is a first-generation American citizen. His parents, Cesare and Rosa, moved the family to Lodi, CA from Minnesota in the early 1920s, and Peter Sr.’s career in the wine industry was sparked with a summer job assembling boxes for shipping grapes. A veteran of the Second World War, Mr. Mondavi earned a degree in economics from Stanford University and researched oenology at UC Berkeley. Soon after the war, Mr. Mondavi joined his brother (Robert) in heading the Charles Krug winery. He has since played a key role in cementing Charles Krug’s place as one of Napa Valley’s premier wineries. Peter, Sr. is credited with being the first to experiment with cold fermentation during his tenure at UC Berkeley, a technique that eventually became a standard industry practice. “Most of the wines at that time were made at higher temperatures, where they would lose their fruit character through oxidation,” he explains. He was also the first to introduce the use of French oak barrels and glass-lined tanks to Napa Valley. The United States Congress and California Governor Jerry Brown have both recognized Mr. Mondavi’s contributions to the California wine industry. As he approaches his 100th birthday, his passion for innovation and improvement remains intact - he was a key proponent of Charles Krug’s recent $30 million investment in Bordeaux grape varietal plantings and facility upgrades including the restoration of the 19th century Redwood Cellar. Along with the recent improvements to the winery and grounds, the family has implemented sustainable agricultural methods on its entire estate. Sons Peter Jr. and Marc Mondavi handle much of the winery’s operations today, but Mr. Mondavi still plays an active role in ensuring the quality of each vintage. The family jokingly refers to “Dad” as “the energizer bunny,” a reference to his unflagging enthusiasm for wine production. “He has boundless energy and tours the winery with a spring in his step on his daily visits,” Peter Jr. marveled. After nearly one hundred years (and counting!), Peter Mondavi Sr. continues to build his legacy. About C. Mondavi & Family Established in the 1940s by Italian immigrants Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, C. Mondavi & Family remains a family-owned business, which has thrived for generations to produce fine wines for a variety of occasions and consumers. Built on a foundation of family values, hard work and European winemaking traditions, the winery offers a portfolio of wines for both special occasions and everyday gatherings of family and friends. Strategic planning and operations are handled by co-proprietors Marc Mondavi and Peter Mondavi Jr., both sons of legendary Napa Valley wine icon Peter Mondavi Sr., who serves as the company’s President and CEO. The family is now proudly welcoming members of the fourth generation to the business, continuing a legacy started almost 70 years ago and setting a foundation for generations to come. 5 March, 2014

Lodi, CA– Later this month, Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP) and the Lodi Winegrape Commission will partner to showcase single vineyard Zinfandels and Lodi vintners’ contemporary winemaking style with this varietal wine at The Lodi Zinfandel Experience, set to take place on March 29 & 30, 2014. The experience will begin on Saturday and includes an educational seminar featuring the Lodi Native Group, escorted vineyard tours and wine tastings at the iconic Zinfandel sites of Soucie, Noma, and Marian’s Vineyards, and a winemaker reception and BBQ-themed dinner at Macchia Wines, catered by French 25, Stockton. On Sunday, event attendees are invited to explore seven Lodi wineries – each a member of ZAP – for exclusive opportunities to take part in barrel and vertical tastings of select Lodi Zinfandels. ZAP’s collaboration with the Lodi Winegrape Commission on The Lodi Zinfandel Experience is part of its ongoing commitment to education and support of regional Zinfandel programs. “We are delighted to be working with the growers and wineries of Lodi,” said Rebecca Robinson, ZAP Executive Director. “Lodi is an important growing region and we support the unique style of winemaking that is being championed by the Lodi Native Group. The mission of the Lodi Native Group is simple: to turn the spotlight on the region’s heritage Zinfandel plantings – many of them dating back to the late 1800’s – through sensible viticulture and minimalist winemaking practices, beginning with native yeast fermentation and use of no new oak. The focus of the project is on Zinfandel, but on the taste of the vineyards rather than varietal character or brand. SakéOne Launches First Saké Keg Nationally: Featuring Momokawa Organic Junmai Ginjo

26 February, 2014

Forest Grove, OR – SakéOne, America’s premium saké company, officially announced the national launch of their Momokawa Organic Junmai Gingo saké in keg form. It’s the first of its kind in the United States, and poised to drastically change the way saké is enjoyed by and marketed to consumers. After a successful Beta program in 2013 in diverse accounts in North America, SakéOne will fully launch the keg program in early 2014. Momokawa Organic Junmai Gingo saké is crafted at SakéOne’s kura in Forest Grove, Oregon, using USDA certified Calrose organic rice polished to 60 percent, giving it the highest possible rating of “Ginjo,” or ultra premium. Its clean, tropical notes make it a wonderful accompaniment to grilled meats and rich shellfish dishes, and is fast proving itself as an ideal component to some of the most exciting new trends in cocktails. The 19.5 liter keg containing Momokawa Organic Junmai Gingo saké features what’s known as a Nitro Keg system, which uses 75 percent nitrogen and 25 percent carbon dioxide to maintain the saké’s freshness and balanced, delicate flavor profile. “We recently brought in Momokawa Junmai Ginjo and it’s already been a resounding success,” says Charli Hamilton, bar manager at Billy Beach Sushi Bar in Seattle. “It's been a perfect addition to our menu, and our customers have really enjoyed it - not only for the fact that it's organic, but also for the full-bodied, smooth flavor. Of course, the novelty also helps!” Pure Food and Wine, New York City’s premier raw vegan restaurant, is the first restaurant in the U.S. to implement the draft saké in it’s cocktail program and currently uses one keg of Momokawa Junmai Gingo per a week due to its creative cocktail program which features the saké. “On busy nights, it creates so much fluidity for turning things out faster. I don't have to worry about running out of product and having to run up and down the steps to grab more bottles. My recycle bin is now so much lower since I've been using the keg,” says Joey Repice, Beverage Director at Pure Food and Wine. “Accessibility, quality, and convenience. You name it – it’s got it.” The Momokawa Organic Junmai Ginjo Saké is currently on tap at restaurant locations in Oregon, California, Washington, Illinois, Nevada and New York.
